Maverick welcomed another office visit from university students on Jan. 12. As known, Maverick always welcomes curious young minds who want to learn first hand what we do in a Communications Consultancy.

Twenty six Bina Nusantara (Binus) University students, majoring in marketing communications, broadcasting and public relations, arrived at our humble, but always bustling office that afternoon for a sharing session. Our sometimes hyperactive colleagues were at their best behavior to welcome the students and we were very glad to find our young Binus friends were completely at ease when they stepped into Maverick headquarter.

Lita Soenardi and Ong Hock Chuan, as the founding partners of Maverick, officially welcomed the visiting students by giving a bit of our history. Maverick started up with only six people in its payroll and almost 10 years later, we have grown to a company with almost 70 employees in total. And Ong shared how we had come to grow this way because we have always differentiate ourselves as a consultancy and not just as any other PR Agency.

After the short intro, Sharon Issabella, one of Maverick’s Senior Consultants who acted as the moderator of the sharing session, introduced Crivenica Alam (Riri), the Head of Consultancy in Maverick who supervises both the corporate and marketing communications practices and manages the consultancy’s day to day operation. Riri opened up the session on “Consultancy in Maverick” topic by explaining the real meaning of Maverick, which originated from Samuel A. Maverick, a mid-19th century American rancher, who refused to do the norm of brand his cattle. The name Maverick then became singular with free-thinking people, who do not conform to the norm. This easily explains what Maverick as a consultancy is really about.

Shilla Christianto, the Vice President of Maverick who is also the Issues and Crisis Management specialist came second to share about that particular topic. She showed the case study of the BP oil spill in the Mexican Gulf as an example and the students were intrigued by the topic.

The next topic of the sharing session was “Integrated Marketing Communications” which was shared by Siti Annisa (Tissa), a Consultant in Maverick who heads accounts such as Coca-Cola Indonesia and a newly acquired client, Acer. Tissa gave a lively and fun presentation on how to differentiate many channels of marketing communications such as, advertising, branding, activation, promotion, direct selling, and public relations by using David Beckham as a brand example.

The last speaker of the day was Hanny Kusumawati, the Head of Raconteur, the New Media division of Maverick. She explained how social media, when done correctly, can be one of the most effective tools of communications in the modern era with the popularity of Facebook, Twitter and blogs.

We could gauge how interested our guests in the topics we talked about as the students asked very good questions. Just to mention a few: they wanted to know how did Maverick handle something the Maverick way; what kind of crisis cases we have handled and how long could a crisis last; and what are the limits of social media communications.

The sharing session went lively and even a bit longer than we anticipated. However, we were glad to have the time to share some of our knowledge with these budding communications practitioners. And after a short office tour, photo session and an informal chat between speakers and students, we waved the Binus students goodbye with a hope that all the information given was useful to help them with their future career in the communications industry.

Like any other company, not everything was always smooth-sailing for Maverick. We’ve experienced ups and downs, gains and losses, winning and losing.

But looking back, we must say that we are extremely proud of how far we have come since that time nine years ago, when we started with one employee. Throughout the years, we’ve had the pleasure of providing our clients with clear strategic thinking, helping them in engaging the public with their stories and even working side-by-side with them during crisis. However, not wanting to toot our own horns we’ll let the clients do it for us.

Timur Sukirno – Managing Partner, Hadiputranto, Hadinoto & Partners – was there in our infancy, and he was also there to celebrate Maverick’s 9th anniversary. We are flattered that he was impressed with Maverick’s combination of solid strategic thinking and clean execution.

Sonitha Poernomo – Country Head of Corporate Affairs, Standard Chartered Bank - thought that our team of young people was always wonderful inside and outside of work.

Jane Mary Morrison – Head of Communications & Contributions, PT H.M. Sampoerna Tbk. – said HMS has been working with Maverick for five years now, thanks to what she termed Maverick’s “professionalism and good network.”

While last but certainly never least, Leila Djafaar – Head of Corporate Affairs, PermataBank – commended us for our superior media monitoring quality and swift response to clients’ needs. She also wished that our business grow even more in the future.

Such wonderful statements and wishes naturally bring twinkle to our eyes, because to watch our people and our clients grow with us is what made us proud above all. Again we thank them, as well as each and every one, past and present, who has helped shape Maverick to what we are today.

It is true that we couldn’t have made it without you. Here’s to another glorious nine years of working and growing together!

To see more of what they said about us, check out the video below.

9 is a special number for Maverick. We were established on 3 June (3+6 = 9), 9 years ago and our office is located at JL. Balitung 3 which is a divisor of 9. Not that we’re cabalistic, but these are nice side thoughts as we celebrate our ninth anniversary.

To celebrate the occasion we held a party for our clients, partners and friends at Poste Kitchen + Bar last Tuesday.

In addition to celebrating our 9th anniversary, we took the occasion to launch three Maverick brands as well. These are: Raconteur which helps clients engage with their audience through online and offline activities; training division Brio that brings specialist knowledge to companies and organizations; and Gauge, the first and only PR measurement service in Indonesia. Around 125 guests came to celebrate and witness the birth of these new brands with us.

Maverick continues to consolidate its position as one of Indonesia’s leading communications consultancies with it being named PR Agency of the Year 2011 by MIX magazine. MIX is the reference publication for communication and marketing in Indonesia. This award is based on the result of the magazine’s survey of almost 100 journalists working in various desks and media.

Maverick Technical Advisor Ong Hock Chuan sees that because journalists are normally very skeptical of communications people, it is very gratifying to receive this award. It signifies recognition of professionalism from the industry’s toughest critics.

More importantly, AdwiYudiansyah who heads Maverick’s media relations team thinks the vote of confidence from journalists is an affirmation of Maverick’s approach to media relations, which is to treat journalists with professional respect and to engage them with only solid, newsworthy information that will help them to write good stories.

Maverick is also delighted to know that three of our clients’ communications programs were also recognized for their excellence by MIX magazine.

Mandala Airlines’ communications efforts to thousands of affected customers, partners, regulators and investors during a difficult time in the beginning of 2011, won the Gold Award in the Corporate PR category. AXIS won a Silver Award in the Marketing PR category with its ‘AXIS Menang Bareng’ campaign which attracted 230,000 participants, helped Axis increase consumers’ usage of its mobile packages and attracted hundreds of new customers. Meanwhile, the US Embassy in Jakarta won a Silver Award in the Social Campaign category with ‘Berbagi Indonesia: A Campaign to Welcome President Obama’. This social media campaign netted the embassy 70,000 new friends for its Facebook Page and exponentially increased the engagement level with its audiences in other social media platforms.

Congratulations!

Last February, I was blessed with a holiday trip fully paid by Maverick. I decided to use up my Personal Development Fund to explore Kuala Lumpur after being given a training opportunity there. It’s a city I’ve never experienced despite known as the 9th most visited city in the world Here’s a few snap shots of my 3-days KL PDF trip:

TOURIST TRAILS

As a KL first-timer, it’s essential that I check out the must-see tourist attractions, so like all devoted KL tourists, I started by taking photos in front of the Petronas Twin Towers. I didn’t expect this to be such a breath taking experience (;P), but the 88-storey Twin Towers are totally magnificent. I spent a whole half an hour just staring at them and taking funny poses with my colleagues in front of them.

Fun pose in front of Petronas Tower

The mighty Petronas Twin Tower

Crazy pics with colleagues

Taking the KL hop-on hop-off bus is also worth it to explore the city. By paying RM38, you’ll get an easy city tour that has 22 stops and covers more than 40 attractions. The 1st stop is at the Malaysia Tourism Center and finishes at the Petronas Twin Towers.

KL Hop On Hop Off Bus

Dataran Merdeka - one of the bus stop

In the KLCC area, I decided to go inside Petrosains – a discovery learning centre build by Petronas. I had lots of fun gaining knowledge on the world of science but at times felt like the site is meant to brainwash kids on PETRONAS’s goodness.

Geological diorama at Petrosains

Petronas F1 Car Mock-up

F1 Racing at Petrosains

Petronas rig mock-up

I also had the chance to go to the Genting Highlands – an outer part of Kuala Lumpur, famous for its cooler climate and gambling casinos. The transportation to go there is very convenient. With RM 43, you’ll experience a one-hour bus ride and 15-minutes cable car ride to the outdoor theme park.

Genting Skytrain

The theme park has had its glory days and is very old now, but I had a great time there as a rollercoaster enthusiast. My favorite rides had to be Space Shot – a ride that takes you up 185 feet and drops you 67 km/hour and Flying Coaster - a hang-gliding roller coaster that gives you a Superman-style flying experience.

Genting Outdoor Theme Park

FOOD FRENZY

Being a true foodie with a Facebook album dedicated to good food, trying out KL cuisine is a must. I have tried them all, from Nasi Lemak to Teh Tarik at Mamak (local coffee shop nickname).

Nasi Lemak in Old Town Coffee Shop

Dimsum at Kedai Kopi Mee Bon

But the highlights include Restoran Fatty Crab in SS 24 which is notorious for its Chicken Wings and Crabs. This non-halal restaurant is proud of its finger licking good chicken wings and dip toasted bread in the chilli crab gravy.

Fatty Crab Restaurant

Sweet Sour Crab at Fatty Crab

I also tried Malaysian’s local durian, Musang bought in Donald’s Durian in SS 2. They say the smell of this durian is so good that a musang (fox) dares to approach this thorny fruit. It has a bitter-sweet taste and soft succulent flesh.

Donald's Durian

For desserts, it’s my first time trying IKEA’s Daim cake. I know it’s supposed to be cheap cafeteria food for Sweden but for me it’s a heavenly dessert made for gods. ;9

IKEA's Cafetaria

NIGHTLIFE SCENE

Kuala Lumpur has a lot to offer on their nightlife scene, although I think it’s not as happening and vibrant as Jakarta. KL residents love to hang-out at night, mainly because their morning starts at 7 AM and the city gets dark after 7 PM. They have pubs and lounge areas such as Jl. P.Ramlee and Bangsar. But the current happening area right now is Changkat & Cheylon street in Bukit Bintang. Luckily, I’m staying in a budget hotel right in the heart of that area. So on my last night in KL, I had a chance to take a stroll along that street. It’s basically a long stretch of road filled with bars and pubs on each side, a typical expatriate area. Met up with some local friends there who introduced me to a unique clubbing experience. They were Indians… So where do Indians go clubbing…? An Indian club! We went to Oscar Club in Istana Hotel. The visitors are Indians (of course), the music was Hindi remixes and the moves were taken straight from Bollywood movies. I think I did quite well keeping with the pluck-the-stars and wash-the-dishes moves!

Oscar Club, Istana Hotel

First timer to Indian club

SHOP ‘TILL YOU DROP

As many other Asian big cities, Kuala Lumpur has shopping as their main attraction. Malls there are as abundant as Jakarta. Some of the big names I visited are Suria KLCC, Pavillion Kuala Lumpur and Sungai Wang Plaza. They have a few brands that Indonesia don’t have but I think 80% of the mall tenants can be easily found in Jakarta. If you’re a shoe lover then you need to visit Vincci outlet in Sungai Weng Plaza. Tons of nice shoes with discount prices – I even got myself 3 pairs.

When all outer appearances have been fulfilled and you need to decorate your domestic pad, be sure to visit IKEA in Damansara, Petaling Jaya. That place is a furniture heaven and if you’re an impulsive buyer can burn holes in your pocket very badly. Everything from bed sheets to scented candles, IKEA has it all. I really wish for IKEA coming to Jakarta soon. I had a great time taking posing-in-my-own-apartment-wannabe photos with friends there.

With friends at IKEA

In a nutshell, Kuala Lumpur felt like Jakarta with better transportation. They have subways, monorails and nice cable cars although it hasn’t covered all areas yet. Traffic jams can be a pain during office hours because it’s cheap to buy car in KL now.

Do you want to get rich? That question seems shallow, but really if we’re being honest the answer would be yes. Money is by no means everything there is to life, but certainly it makes living a whole lot easier. Can everyone get rich? Of course. But how to get there, now that’s a different matter.

The business of getting rich is tricky. Finance is infamously difficult to understand, which is why a lot of people don’t bother getting in touch with it in the first place. Meanwhile, to get rich you need to know how money works and how to make your money work for you. Getting rich takes a lot of planning, a little bit of gambling (in the positive sense of the word), and a healthy dose of luck. Everybody can get there if only we want to bother. This is what Mavericks learnt from a session of Rich Game with financial planner Aidil Akbar last Monday.

Rich Game is an original board game created by Aidil to teach people about finances. It is similar to Monopoly, except that instead of buying land or going to jail, we buy gold, trade stocks and lose our job. The objective is to get rich by amassing as much assets as we possibly can, before we die or the game ends. We will go through a variety of real-life financial experiences such as receiving salary and bonus, as well as paying for our children’s dental care, insuring our house, even getting fined by the police! This way, we will have fun while learning financial know-how.

Rich Game by Aidil Akbar - turns out that getting rich takes more than just saving your money in a piggybank

Players are divided into teams of 2, role-playing as husband and wife. Before the game begins, each team randomly picks a career card which has a salary and monthly household expenses. The more salary we have, the more expenses we have to shell out because according to the economic principle, the higher the supply, the higher demand there is. So if we earn more, then naturally we’ll be spending more as well. In addition to this, there are also income tax and zakat in fixed percentage relative to our salary that we need to pay every month.

Then there are also ‘Expense’ and ‘Investment Opportunity’ boxes. A team that lands on ‘Expense’ must pay for whatever is written on the card that the banker pulls out, like car repair or gym membership. This illustrates that in life, there are sudden expenses outside of our plan that we must be prepared for. Meanwhile if a team lands on an ‘Investment Opportunity’ box, there is a financial situation complete with a particular opportunity for investment that all teams can choose whether they want to take or not. For example: interest rates are up, and gold is on sale – buy, sell, or hold? We can also open a deposit account and purchase insurance for health, household, and car. With realistic examples like these, understanding how financial instruments work suddenly doesn’t feel like a chore.

If I go this way, can I get my salary twice?

Mavericks participated in the game with a number of Jakarta bloggers. None of us wanted to lose of course, so it was highly competitive yet full of friendly banter. One by one all the good men (and women) fell down, succumbing to the temptation of worldly pleasures and not saving enough. In the end only 2 Mavericks left standing – me, who died young with my ‘husband’, but because we were smart with our money when we lived, we were the richest in our group. And Cipluk, who emerged as the overall champion with the most assets. She won a package consisting of financial education books written by Aidil Akbar himself and one set of Rich Game. Meanwhile, the rest of us also received a book on syaria finances to remind us of the importance of managing our money.

Thank you to Aidil Akbar and our blogger friends – Ollie, Titiw, Sabai @_dita @mrbambang and many others, we Mavericks are now on our way toward wealth and the good life!

Mavericks & Aidil Akbar - we'll be rolling in riches, watch this space!

Have you ever seen those awesome videos about Google office–with lots of food and drinks and game boards, and people wearing jeans and shirt laughing and having a good time? And have you ever wondered whether those were true; and start questioning: do people actually work in Google?

They do. I personally think, they work for fun! And why the heck did I say that?

Well, as one of Young Caring Professional Award (YCPA) 2010 winners, last Monday, I got a chance to visit Google office in Singapore! Located at the 38th floor of 8 Shenton Way, Google office Singapore is the miniature of those awesome Google office videos/images you’ve ever seen!

They do have those colorful walls, a wall full of colorful pictures of Googleys smiling and having fun, jars full of candies, chocolates and sweets, soft drink and coffee corner, as well as a huuuge canteen with egg station and different kind of food for lunch, game boards, comfy sofas, bed-like sofas with curtains… you name it!

As I was walking down the aisle to the meeting room with a bunch of other YCPA winners, I bumped into a guy who was smearing jam over his bread and asked, “Hey, where are you from, what’s the ocassion?” Turned out, this guy was Henky Prihatna, Global Content Community Manager at Google Singapore–and, an Indonesian! So we talked a bit about, of course, the upcoming Pesta Blogger

Next, I met Sarah Robb, Head of Human Resources of Google Southeast Asia, who talked to us about Google’s culture and core values. If you’d like to work in Google, apart from the skills set required, it’s also important that you’re humble, willing to communicate openly, passionate about how you can change the world, eager to roll up your sleeves and get things done, plus it’s compulsory that you have other activities outside work!

“We’d like to know if Googleys are also successful in their life outside work,” said Sarah.

Sarah also told us some of Google’s core values, but the ones that are most interesting to me are “have fun” (and they surely know how to do it!) and “you can be serious without a suit” It reflects Googley approach on work as well. They just love the company, the c0-workers, and the work they’re performing. Thus work doesn’t feel like work. It’s not a burden. It’s fun. It’s hard to tell whether Googleys are working or having fun–they’re working while having fun, and having fun while working!

“We’re having healthy disrespect of the impossible,” said Sarah. Googleys are not afraid to try new things, experiment, and launch new products or services. The sooner the better. “It’s better to start and fail than never started anything!”

In Google, every week they have a brainstorming session to throw ideas on recent or upcoming Google products, also to dig deeper on how Google products can be useful for their advertisers.

Next, Vinoaj Vijeyakumaar from Google Analytics JAPAC Lead, Media & Platforms Solutions at Google shared some stories about Google’s products; and some great stuff developers have built around the world using Google And yes, yes, yes, this is my favorite session! As Vinny (that’s his nickname) talked, I got lots of ideas and inspirations to be applied to some of my clients’ campaign. The possibility is endless; and ideas kept popping up in my head! That was the best feeling!

Pearl Yao, Media Sales Consultant Online Sales & Operations of Google Singapore also shared about how advertisers can make use of Google analytics and other Google products to increase the impact of their advertising effort. One of the example she told us was about Michelle Phan, a girl who loved to provide make-up tutorials on YouTube and now being the official spokesperson of Lancome cosmetics.

Then I got a chance to meet Erika Oktora as well, she was another Indonesian (29 years old, born in Pontianak) who’s working in Google Singapore (there are 4 Indonesian in Google Singapore now). Erika’s background was accounting, but now she’s the AdWords Accounts Strategist for Google and her task includes helping clients/advertisers to design their campaign and get the most out of Google.

Erika told us that she applied for a job at Google via website, and then had to undergo 8 layers of interviews! And these were one-on-one interviews–a long way to go, but she made it!

Fira Basuki, the chief editor of Cosmpolitan magazine who were there with me asked Erika, what was the interview question she remembered the most.

“They asked how many dimples are there in a golf ball,” said Erika

All of us let out a ‘phew’. And Fira asked Erika, “Wow, so what was your answer to that?”

Erika smiled, “Well, I said… just Google it!”

It was a short visit to Google Singapore, but I just loved it! It was so inspiring to see a lively office space, with friendly people who are having fun with what they do, and to see how Googleys at Google really live up to their values.

___

When I got got back to Maverick‘s office on Tuesday, I was struck by this warm feeling as I saw people jumping and yelling “Aaaaa, you’re baaaack! How’s Google?” while joking around and munching in our ‘living room’ that was full of chocolates and sweets.

Then I got to New Media Division’s room and grinned at Kapkap‘s comic wall–capturing all the funny and silly things we’ve done.

Then my boss came by and I teased him on how he became slimmer after his bypass surgery (Me: Okay, be honest, are you having a bypass or tummy tuck? | Ong: Well, I thought, hey Doc, after my chest, can you do my stomach as well?).

Faintly, I could hear Surya singing pop-songs in the morning, excited gasp and laughter from here and there as Sharon and Adis watched the talked-about YouTube video Keong Racun…

I got back to my desk and smiled. I might not work in Google — but hey, I love the company I’m working at, I love my colleagues, I love my job…

The IT enthusiasts in the United States, as well as around the world, was in shock yesterday due to a recent news from the US government: It has been decided that jailbreaking iPhone is no longer illegal. This is good news for many users, and a possible nightmare for Apple.

The US government stated that iPhone jailbreaking is legal if it is for educational and non-profit purposes, according to Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), that’s being reviewed every three year by the Library of Congress.

What this means for the users is that they can jailbreak iPhone to install an application that has not been approved by Apple, but is a legal (not pirated) application.

The six exemptions for DMCA this year are:

1. Defeating a lawfully obtained DVD’s encryption for the sole purpose of short, fair use in an educational setting or for criticism

2. Computer programs that allow you to run lawfully obtained software on your phone that you otherwise would not be able to run aka Jailbreaking to use Google Voice on your iPhone

3. Computer programs that allow you to use your phone on a different network aka Jailbreaking to use your iPhone on T-Mobile

4. Circumventing video game encryption (DRM) for the purposes of legitimate security testing or investigation

5. Cracking computer programs protected by dongles when the dongles become obsolete or are no longer being manufactured

6. Having an ebook be read aloud (ie for the blind) even if that book has controls built into it to prevent that sort of thing.

Up until now, jailbreaking iPhone has been a practice that is done widely under the table, including in Indonesia. Although this rule doesn’t affect us, the Indonesian users, much, but the height of this event is rather hard to miss. It may also change the way we see iPhone and its application that, until now, seems exclusive. This rule may also affect the sales of iPhone and its applications, which definitely is something that Apple will not like.

So, what do you think about this new exemption? And how will it affect Apple?

Before some of you freaked out, rest assured that Google is still being Google and 21 Cineplex is still being, well, 21 Cineplex.

On June 22, Google launched Google Chrome Indonesia. Although many Indonesia geeks and onliners already familiar with Google and its product (me myself using Google Chrome for daily browsing activities,) on that particular event Google decided to “go local”. They blatantly stated “Google Chrome Indonesia.” With all its glory, “Indonesia” is now a part of Google (although in more hilarious note, Google Translate already got translation for Sundanese )

And it wasn’t long before some local companies decided to take part of the fun.

21 Cineplex, one of movie moguls in Indonesia, cooperated with Google Chrome to create special extension in Google Chrome, dubbed ’21Cineplex Google Chrome Extension’.

For some of you that wondering what Google Chrome extension is, it works similarly with Mozilla Firefox extension. Or if my explanation still sounds too techie for you, Google Chrome Extensions (as being explained also by Wikipedia) are small programs that modify Google Chrome browser. They are quite helpful though. You could bookmark your favorite link in a single click or knowing the amount of unread e-mail in your Google Mail inbox without having to open a web window to check it.

Here in this case, 21 Cineplex extension helps the user to see information about newest released movies. Users could check the information and even the schedule without having to open 21 Cineplex’s website.

I should admit this approach by 21 Cineplex and Google Chrome is really interesting. In order to grab local market/Indonesia onliners, Google Chrome cooperating with 21 Cineplex. In the other hand, 21 Cineplex increasing the simplicity of accessing the information of their products. What’s more, 21 Cineplex appreciates Indonesia onliners, and Google Chrome appreciates the need of Indonesia onliners.

Personally I’m hoping that in the near future, there will be more local companies cooperating with Google Chrome and other browsers to meet the market’s need.

You could check/download the extension here: Google Chrome Extensions – 21Cineplex.
