Udah baca Harian Detik? Eh, bukan…bukan Detik.com, tapi Harian Detik. Wajar aja kalau nama mereka mirip. Wong, memang masih satu perusahaan dengan Detik.com kok. Jadi, Detik.com sekarang itu bikin koran.

“Ha?

Detik hanya melakukan satu (iya, satu!) berita follow up tentang kasus sang presenter sekaligus pelantun lagu Hancur Hatiku itu. Padahal media online saingannya sudah membuat sekitar delapan berita follow up kasus tersebut.

Hmm….

Maverick team always has a ‘Sharing Session’ every Friday. On the last day of 2010, I shared about a book called The Richest Man in Babylon, written by George S. Clason on 1926. It is one of the oldest financial self-help books that mostly revolve around wisdom and principals on acquiring wealth. The knowledge given is very basic, yet it reminds all of us that we need to be consistently prudent, wise, and have self-control on budgeting and spending.

It all started when some people realized that there is a great disparity between the rich and the poor in Babylon, and the richest man called Arkad had agreed to share his knowledge with fellow citizens. Although he started as a poor man and had failures due to inexperience, he finally succeeded by starting only from one simple truth – “A Part of All You Earn is Yours to Keep”.

To follow the above statement, here are seven cures for a lean purse. It is more of a step by step guidance on accumulating wealth, and the answer of what you must do with “A Part of All I Earn is Mine to Keep”:

The First Cure: Start thy purse to fattening

Question is, how? We all want our purse to be fat, but there are always things that we want to have, buy or eat! Arkad stated that for each ten coins he put in, he uses only 9 of them. As time goes by, the 1 coin left every month will start to fatten your purse.

The Second Cure: Control thy expenditures

Do you know that your expenditure will increase as your income increases? Humans are never satisfied, always wanting more and more. To be able to keep one-tenth of your earnings and fulfill your needs, you need to be strict in budgeting.

The Third Cure: Make thy Gold Multiply

Now, what must we do with the one-tenth? Only saving it wouldn’t make us rich, for sure. Multiply it by laboring it! Invest it, because a man’s wealth is not in the coins he carries in his purse but it is in<ins datetime="2011-01-26T09:19" cite="mailto:associate_desktop"> </ins>the incomes that he builds.

The Fourth Cure: Guard thy treasure from loss

Arkad strongly says for us not be intrigued by earning a large income. We must acquaint ourselves first to the dangers that we might encounter. He advised to consult the wisdom of those who are experienced in handling money for profit because such advice is free (during their time) and its value is the same with that of gold. You can try by asking your friends who have had experience in investments, property or stock market.

The Fifth Cure: Make of thy dwelling a Profitable Investment

Dwelling here means a home. Own your own home, and then you don’t need to worry about paying rent anymore. A home will bring you peace and happiness, and therefore let money come<del datetime="2011-01-26T09:22">s</del> to you more and more.

The Sixth Cure: Insure a Future Income

One day we’ll grow old and won’t be able to work anymore. To rely on our children is also not recommended since they might not have the same knowledge, interest or passion as us. Time changes almost everything. If we have a stable and profitable investment that may endure safely for many years, it can assure an income for the future.

The Seventh Cure: Increase thy Ability to Earn

Last of all, Arkad said that the cure is “to cultivate thy own powers, to study and become wiser, to become more skillful, to so act as to respect thyself”. The more skills and knowledge we have, the more income we can make. The more income we make, the more resource for investment we may have.

These are basic suggestions, and since they are very simple we can always remind ourselves not to go beyond our limit. We now know the wisdom that to invest means to control our expenditures, to budget, to know our surroundings and know what to invest. So, good luck!

By: Kintan

I still remember my first year in the university, when I started to have this urge to be part of the Indonesian wildlife protection force. My heart is stirred every time I read an article about an orangutan or a gibbon somewhere in the forest of Kalimantan trapped by hunters or shot dead by local communities who cleared their lands from ‘pests’.

I felt helpless, but refused to give up. I read magazines, newspapers, books, and whatever I could get my hands on. I went to environmental exhibitions and wrote essays about this issue. Then one day, I found an information in a teen magazine about an organization called ProFauna that fight for the protection of Indonesian wildlife and its habitats. I googled and downloaded more information. A couple of weeks later I became a member of this organization.

That was the era of Web 1.0, where you searched for information on the web, joined the cause, participated in offline activities, and created a difference together.

Now that we’re in the era of Web 2.0, I am slightly frustrated with the notion of tactfully managing our online and offline lives. Not entirely a ‘digital native‘, for me the Web 2.0 buzz is earsplitting and the changing public commons confusing.

Lately I have also been bothered by the thought of how this Web 2.0 world is infringing, or at the very least, disturbing our once nicely balanced world order. Back then, you had your tripartite: government, businesses, and NGOs. Now, individuals are empowered with tools that make them just as powerful as organizations in shaping public policy and business decisions.

And then one morning, Ong said, “Here Kintan, I thought you might be interested in reading this,” and handed me Tom Watson’s book, “CauseWired: Plugging in, Getting Involved, Changing the World“. I though, how in the world was he able to read my mind?

In the Web 2.0 era, the form of “Activism on the Net” has changed. It’s now causewired. The topic of activism on the net is an interesting domain of study within the PR and New Media umbrella, particularly how new media is changing the landscape of people’s involvement and activism. I no longer have to search through magazines and newspapers to find a community of people who share the same cause, I have the tools right here at my very disposal with my netbook or laptop or PC. In fact, everybody does. All they have to do is log on.

The central thesis of the book is basically on how new technology plus the human urge to communicate equals the basis for a golden age of activism and involvement. Whether that golden age will materialize or not depends on several things: how well technology is used, how open the network remains, and what voices rise to lead the movement.

By definition, ’cause’ is a situation that motivate people to try to change some part of the status quo, and ‘wired’ is not just the cords attaching your computer to a wall, but the people on vast network of networks.

Even as the newness of social media will begin to wear-off, one area will see a burst of energy and entrepreneurial spirit: the nexus between media technology & causes.

The book explores several contents about Causewired activism in its chapters:

• Friending for good: The Facebook Philanthropists
• Peer-to-Peer Philanthropy
• Defined by Causes: the Public Lives of Millenials
• From the bottom-up: “The Order is Rapidly Fading”
• Spare the paperwork: The Quick Rise of Flash Causes
• Heralds of Change: Giving goes Open Source
• Aspiration and Activism: Armies of Online Leaders
• Distributing the Causewired future

If Web 1.0’s identity was anonymous, Web 2.0’s identity is authenticity. The book emphasizes that identity is important to philanthropy, social activism, and political organizing. Identity matters and this becomes a key factor of creating/ joining causes. Identity is the social validation welded to each non-profit, candidate, or campaign on Facebook.

For Millenials who are digital natives, oversharing and having a globally publicized identity is part of their everyday lives, while others who lack enthusiasm will fall behind. Today, with your user profile, everyone becomes a microcelebrity. And young people are developing interesting social skills to adapt to microframe and on how to live in front of a crowd.

Giving is now “Open Source”, where anyone can donate, and donors want to know how their money is being used, i.e. HopeEquity, DonorsChoose, Kiva, etc. This is what you call Peer2Peer philanthropy.

The founder of Change.org, Ben Rattray argues that good online fundraising requires 4 assets: awareness, engagement, activism, and recurrence. Currently in the Causewired world, there is still very little of the last two: activism and recurrence. In Web 2.0 everyone has the same equal opportunity to fight for their cause. But the book keeps mentioning over and over again that the biggest lesson about organizing online is complementing it with offline organizing.

What is often missing in most causes? The Engagement Coefficient which means how people are moved to take action.
There’s a lot of passion out there with the Millenials. But passion itself isn’t enough, the idea is to get things done.

The internet at the Web 2.0 revolution requires offline social capital to reach its true potential. After all the clicking, emailing, viewing and posting, people need to get up from their chairs and step outside. Like what the Coiners do from time to time

The Causewired phenomenon is intrinsically democratic:

It lowers the barriers of entry that organizations traditionally have had

It puts the tools of attention, fund raising, and action into the hands of any citizen who cares enough to use them (doesn’t necessarily have to be a non-profit)

Anti-bureaucracy, and one that prizes transparency

But at the same time, leadership is still a long-sought for quality and a real change maker in this incredibly individualistic landscape. Why? There are a couple reasons:

1. Online organizing requires a hierarchy and initiative
2. Moving from on-line to in-person cements a cause
3. Small and well-connected is still more effective thn huge movements yet widely disbursed

So, the conclusion is: although we may have equal access to information and equal opportunity to get involved, we are not all equal in the Causewired world. Some people build and work and lead; others – simply follow.

Now, who wants to change the world?
