TALKING POINTS

by: Hanny

The 2009 General elections are around the corner and candidates have saturated streets and public spaces with their posters, many of which have little to do with image building or with taste. Casting a critical eye on all these electoral capers is movie director Mirwan Suwarso and his colleague Amien Krisna, who’s set up a satirical website called Jangan Bikin Malu 2009: Penerangan di tengah Bualan [Don't Embarrass 2009: Enlightenment in the midst of Fabrication].

Launched in the 1st week of February, the site  highlights the tasteless (and some downright silly electoral posters) of candidates from 38 Indonesian political parties.

Anyone can contribute to the site by sending ideas, photos or videos, and actively participating in the site’s vote-page and rank the most-humiliating election posters here.

While thinking further on how you’d like to contribute to this blog, you can also enjoy a series of satirical short-movies from award-winning actor Tio Pakusadewo and his “GEMBELTAI” party, as well as a video clip contribution from popular hip-hop group Saykoji, featuring Ras Muhamad. They are performing a song entitled “Sesungguhnya”—reflecting their own critical view on Indonesia’s general elections and the quality of future leaders.

Wondering how political parties would utilize their new media strategy in response to this.

Oh, anyway, Happy Birthday to Mirwan! February 18, and this posting is dedicated to you!
